What Is Breastmilk Jewellery and How Is It Made?

If you've found yourself here, chances are you've heard of breastmilk jewellery and are wondering how on earth it's actually made!

Breastmilk jewellery is exactly what it sounds like, a piece of jewellery made using your own breastmilk. It's a beautiful way to celebrate your breastfeeding journey and preserve a small piece of a chapter that often passes by far too quickly.

Whether you breastfed for a few days, a few months or several years, every journey matters and deserves to be remembered.

So, How Is Breastmilk Jewellery Made?

Once your breastmilk arrives with me, the first step is preservation.

I use a trusted preservation powder to preserve your breastmilk. It's actually the exact same method I used for my own milk, so I know first hand how well it works and how beautifully it keeps the milk's natural colour.

Your breastmilk is gently heated to kill off any bugs and combined with the preservation powder. This creates a paste, which is then spread thinly onto greaseproof paper and left to dry.

Every order is carefully labelled and kept completely separate throughout the process. Your breastmilk and inclusions are stored within your collection kit box, ensuring they stay safely together from start to finish.

What Happens Next?

The drying process takes just under a week.

Once fully dried, the preserved breastmilk is ready to be made into your keepsake.

The preserved powder is then incorporated into high grade jeweller's resin. Depending on your chosen design, I can also add inclusions such as hair, ashes, umbilical cord, dried flowers, shimmer or birthstones.

The resin is carefully poured, shaped and cured before being finished by hand and set into your chosen piece of jewellery.

More Than Just Jewellery

One of my favourite parts of this job is seeing the stories behind each order.

For some families it's a celebration of years of breastfeeding. For others it's a reminder of a journey that didn't go quite as planned. Some mums order whilst they're still feeding and others years after they've weaned. Although most seem to find me at 2am whilst scrolling one handed during a night feed!

Whatever your story looks like, it matters.

I always say that mums should be so proud of themselves. You're doing one of the most important jobs in the world, raising and nurturing a little human and somehow doing it with no pay.

Breastmilk jewellery isn't just a ring or necklace. It's a reminder of the cuddles, comfort, hard days, good days and everything in between. A tiny piece of a chapter you'll never get back, preserved forever.
